3 stars After the magnificient "The angel and the dark river", the band returns with a less inspired album which is worse in in almost all aspects.

Music ideas are not as good, the material is less memorable. That does not mean that there aren't strong cuts, such as the first track (title track) reminiscent of the second track from "The angel and the dark river". It is a perfectl doomy track with powerful organ and violin, trademarks of My Dying Bride at that time. There are slowlier and faster themes to vary.

The chorus is catchy and well thought-out.

"Grace unhearing" also has a memorable riff with alternation between a major and minor chord.

"All swept away" is a short but quite versatile and tempo changing track, recommended for proggier listeners.

Then a couple of less memorable track appear until a "Here in the throat" with remotely dramatic . progressive doom/heavy metal section.

To hear one of the iconic tracks and the most original one, you need to wait until the end - a haunting ballad with no drums and only keyboards/violin + vocals conjure a beautiful atmosphere.
