Leviathan biography
LEVIATHAN are a classic progressive metal band, whose style derives from bands such as DREAM THEATER, early QUEENSRYCHE, and later-period FATES WARNING. The band's basic sound is pretty streamlined power/prog metal with a bit of technicality. The vocal style is operatic which improves on each disc. The strongest element of the bands sound is the emotion that they convey with the music.

Their albums have consistently garnered favorable reviews but they have yet to move up to the major league of progressive metal bands. Their last two discs (Riddles..." & Scoring The Chapters") are top notch albums. It will be surely appreciated both by the fans of this kind of music, and by the younger people searching for the heavy prog roots.

3 stars One of the lesser known prog metal acts from the 90s is for sure the americans from Leviathan. Even they released 3 albums in mid to late 90s they disbanded in early 00s and then reform to release two more albums few years back. Well, the best offerings are the first 3 albums, with a plus on their second offer from 1996 named Riddles, questions, poetry and outrage I don't know why this band didn't recive more reviews or ratings across the years, this album in particulary offering some great prog metal totaly a typical for prog scene, that is meaning they don't sound at all like DT for instance or Shadow Gallery. Is a perfect example of a band trying to push against the flow of that period. The music is not overly complex but there are some very nice instrumental sections. A combination of Fates Warning/Queensryce and similar with bands such as Clockwork also from USA and few more. Pieces like opening Census Of Stars or Madness Endeavor showing exactly the potential of this band, excellent prog metal from clean voices to inspired instrumental parts, this was the prog metal from the 90s, a well written and performed style. To me a truly great album that desearves a far more recognition. 3 solid stars rounded to 3.5 for sure.

Review by White Feather

5 stars How did such a brilliant band such as Leviathan slip through the cracks ? With great lyrics and cutting edge prog metal chops that would appeal to anybody into Queensryche through to Dream Theate,r it seems astonishing that this band are vertualy unkown. Scoring The Chapters is perhaps Leviathans best works if you see it be sure to buy it you wont regret it ! Masterpiece worthy of being added to any decent prog metal collection!
