Efterklang biography
Efterklang is a band from Copenhagen, Denmark, and was founded in 2001. Casper Clausen, Mads Brauer and Rasmus Stolberg grew up on the small Danish island of Als, close to the German border. These childhood friends moved to Copenhagen with the desire to make music. In Copenhagen the trio met with Rune Mølgaard and Thomas Husmer, and they started to play music under the name of Efterklang ever since.

In 2003 Efterklang self-released their first record with the EP called Springer. A year later the band released their first full-length album, Tripper, under The Leaf Label. Tripper's sound is characterized by its combination of IDM, chamber music and "post-pop" as well as its multilayered vocals and jagged song structures made by their glitch IDM sound. The Leaf Label also officially released Springer the year later. In 2006 Efterklang released One Sided LP and in 2007 the EP called Under Giant Trees, which was a sort-of precursor to their next full-length album. The same year saw the release of their second album, Parades. Parades was a drastic change from their debut. This album had a bigger and less somber sound. Efterklang had almost completely shed off its IDM sound in favor of a more orchestrated sound made of a brass quintet, string quartet and three choirs.

Efterklang's music can be seen as unique in their debut, while still holding on to some resemblance to bands like Sigur Ros and A Silver Mt. Zion. The glitch sound in their music makes their "pop" songs sound bolder and more daring than the usual while the post-rock sound shows off their minimalist way of playing their instruments, and their chamber music makes their sound even more enjoyable. With Parades the band's music gained a more acoustic and natural sound than before. Highly recommended.

Efterklang Post Rock/Math rock

Review by toroddfuglesteg

3 stars My second release from this Danish band I have added to my "watch list" for the next years.

This is their first proper studio album. The music is a sort of post rock, but in a Scandinavian way. The mood is sad and downtuned like the band carries the weight of all their sins on their shoulders. A typical Scandinavian trait transferred to the music scene in this area. The downtuned sound also goes for the male and female vocals. Very downtuned and more like instruments underlining the other instruments and mood than vocals in a traditional sense. Kind of unnerving, really. Some of the music is also in the fortissimo tradition where you have insane fast pulses of music on the top of a slow rhythm. This too is unnerving bleak music. The overall mood and sound is bleak in other words. Welcome to the bleak Scandinavia.

The quality of the music is good throughout. The lack of some really great tunes being it's undoing. A familiar complaint from myself, but that is how I judge music. But there is plenty of good stuff here to keep Efterklang on my watch list forever. This band has something good going for them although this album is a bit underwhelming.

3 stars The debut from this Danish post rock band.

Efterklang has got a good name in the post rock/shoegaze scene. They set out ther stall with this album lenght EP. The emphasis is on creating melancholic moods with bursts of energetic guitars underpinned by melancholic piano, sound samples and keyboards. That and some low tuned female and male vocals. The music ebbs and flows like an ocean.

The result is a very typical post rock, it has to be said. But it is also a very effective mix which hits home. Even in homes not used to post rock. This is a well rounded good EP which I really like. But just in small dosages and half an hour with this is sufficient for me. Good stuff, though.

3 stars 3.5 stars really!!!

Probably Denmark's weirdest act, Efterklang is dishing out some of the most singular music from the Northern Europe. Stuck somewhere between Iceland's Sigur Ros and Finland's most exotic Lap folk music, with a dose of serious Bjork, their music is a refreshing sort of post rock, straying away from the usual EITS and GY!BE or Mt Zion realm and in a folk way the Tunng universe at times (Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man), but this is probably due to the fact that both went symphonic and released it. Yes, Efterklang decoded to recreate their previous record Parades to a symphonic orchestra, and chose the Danish National Chamber Orchestra and thus Performing Parades was born.

A superb mini Lp gatefold sleeve with a fascinating drawn artwork with two superbly-designed individual sleeves, the first for the live Cd and the other for the DVD holding the symphonic concert footage, a documentary about it and last but not least?. A bunch of related music videos, most of them a superb animation montage. With such an interesting DVD, it almost renders useless the Cd, but let's face it, watching a DVD while driving?.. Costumes, disguise and conceptual stage set up including the chamber orchestra creating phantasmagorical visualscapes to accompany the strange music, sometimes reminiscent of Tunng's great live presence on stage. Musically as well, there is a bit of Tunng here and there.

In either case, the quintet's weird line-up is partly responsible of their unusual sound. Harmonium,, violin, trombone and a fairly large choir all in one combo will give you strange soundscapes. Efterklang's closest cousin is most likely Sigur Ros, but their palette is less depressing and much wider-scoped than the Hopelandic crew. If you must own just one of their release, this is obviously IT.

3 stars "Under Giant Trees" is an EP release by Danish post-rock act Efterklang. The EP was released through The Leaf Label in April 2007. It was originally limited to 4500 numbered CDs and 1200 numbered LPs. The total playing time is 29:23 minutes so thereīs plenty of quantity for the money. The band writes in the booklet that the 5 tracks were written for concerts they played in 2005 so the songs werenīt exactly new at the time of release, but as Efterklangīs second full-length studio album "Parades" was released in October 2007, I guess the band felt they needed to record and release the songs on "Under Giant Trees" before they were forgotten in the vault.

The music style reminds me a lot of the music on "Parades (2007)" which means experimental post-rock with lots of classical orchestration (not as pompous as the case was on "Parades (2007)" though), whispering male/female vocals, choir arrangements, and a generally sophisticated and adventurous approach to songwriting.

The 5 tracks on the EP are packed in an organic, pleasant, and overall very well sounding production, which does the music great justice. Itīs a case where the stars align. If you are familiar with earlier releases by Efterklang it should come as no surprise that "Under Giant Trees" is overall an intriguing quality release played by passionate and skilled performers. Itīs a release that requires a couple of spins and attention, and Efterklang certainly donīt go for a catchy sound, but given the right amount of listens, the music unveils itīs qualities. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.

3 stars "Parades" is the 2nd full-length studio album by Danish post-rock act Efterklang. The album was released through The Leaf Label in October 2007. Efterklang had up until then worked in something close to DIY mode, but after struggling with recording and finishing "Parades" for nearly 18 months, the band finally decided to bring in producer/engineer Darren Allison to work with Mads Brauer (electronics, flute) on the mixing of the album. So this is an album that took almost 2 years to create and because the band got stuck in the process a couple of times, they decided to do other projects on the side. For example they also worked on the "Under Giant Trees (2007)" EP, which they released in April 2007.

The music on "Parades" is quite different from the music on the debut album "Tripper (2004)" (although the two albums do share some similarities). First of all the dry electronic beats that dominated the rhythm side of "Tripper (2004)" and which were a dominant part of the unique sound on that album, are now almost completely gone from Efterklangīs sound (which isnīt as surprising if you are familiar with the "Under Giant Trees (2007)" EP). Instead thereīre lots of classical orchestral instrumentaion in the music which provide "Parades" with a more organic sound. The instrumentation is sophisticated and the arrangements are quite clever at times. The vocals are still male/female whispering type vocals. Rather monotone to my ears but the melodies does unfold a bit on repeated listens. There are also some choir sections on the album.

The sound production is professional, organic, detailed, and suits the music well. upon conclusion "Parades" is a pretty strong and very unique sounding album. I still think the band struggle a bit to come up with something catchy and memorable, but then again itīs music thatīs intended for serious repeated listening sessions, rather than shallow sing along parties. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is still deserved though.

3 stars "Tripper" is the debut full-length studio album by Danish music artist Efterklang. The album was released through The Leaf Label in October 2004. Efterklang were formed in late 2000 in Copenhagen and released the "Springer" EP in 2003. The EP was originally independently released, but saw a label re-release through The Leaf Label in 2005.

Stylistically the music on "Tripper" is a combination of organic sounding instrumentation (including string arrangements), subtle male and female vocals, and electronic beats. The beats remind me a bit of the beats on Björkīs "Vespertine (2001)" album. Dry minimalistic electronic beats and rhythmic sounds and effects. The first time I listened to the album, I listened to it on my car stereo and I had to take the CD out to see if it was scratched because some of the beats and effects make it sound like that. While that is an odd and at times unpleasant sound effect, itīs still a bit intriguing too. The subtle and often unison male and female vocals are soothing but also a bit anonymous/monotone in the end. Itīs generally very pleasant atmospheric music though, and although I wouldnīt say Efterklang hit something completely unique here, they combine known elements into something intriguing.

The musicianship is excellent. Good vocal performances and great interplay between the musicians. There are several guest musicians and singers on the album who add great variation and spice to the music. "Tripper" also features a warm, organic, and pleasant sounding production, which suits the material well, so upon conclusion itīs a pretty strong debut album by Efterklang. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.

Efterklang Post Rock/Math rock

Review by first_light

5 stars Efterklang is Danish Post-Rock Band that seemed to be influenced by Múm before that Album appeared. For Parades they left their electronica backgrounds behind, stepping into absolutely new territories, and they had about 30 guests with them. As the result they produced an album where clarinettes, trumpets, oboes and violins set the tone instead of guitar or any else known instrument in the genre, just as the whole album leaves every known or common ground. They play an abstract, avant gardish music with a lot of choires doing the vocals , but they donīt do it in a frightening or too serious way, itīs like those musicians played an adult and LSDīd Version of Snow White and the 7 dwarves that in some moments even reminds me King Crimsons Lizard Album. Nice to see them keeping a constant level in quality and production, I read they worked on this Album for 18 months. Hard to judge if the record itself is overproduced, thereīs simply nothing I know to compare with Parades, itīs so fresh, adventureous and colourful, a truly beautiful journey and simply the highest recommendations to everybody admiring the art in the music!!
Thanks to chamberry for the artist addition.
