3 stars Multi-national Jazz Rock band, found by British keyboardist Alex Maguire, known for his involvement in the 05' brief reformation of Hatfield and the North, Belgian guitarist Michelle Deville, leader of The Wrong Object, and American Jazz drummer Tony Bianco. They recorded their debut album in 2009 at Beppe Crovella's Electromantic Studio in San Sebastiano da Po, Italy, featuring Canterbury legend Richard Sinclair, who provides vocals and bass in a few cuts. This came out in 2010 on Moonjune Records, carrying the title ''Never pet a burning dog''.

An album full of vintage jazzy colors and light Canterbury splashes, ''Never pet a burning dog'' is a work, characterized by its semi-improvised parts, frenetic solos, a usually very blistering and sharp sound and the display of a few electric Fusion moments. It often knocks the doors of Experimental Music with the dissonant and abstract executions come and go all the time, but it also offers a monumental Jazz Rock, performed by experienced musicians, full of groovy passages, dramatic tones and emphatic atmospheres.I would split this work in two parts, the first few long pieces are closer to Free Jazz/Jazz Rock with lots of isolated soloing and instrumental excess, based mostly on guitars, drums and electric piano. While not extremely competent, this material is still good for what it is, as the guys came up with some very fiery performances. The second half of the album is more of a Jazz- and Progressive Rock affair, often reminding of MATCHING MOLE, with Macguire adding some notable Mellotron and organ showering in tne tracks, which are now appear to be properly structured, even if the schizophenic drumming and electric piano torturing give an idea of loose executions.Nice Canterbury touches and some engaging jazzy interludes are provided during these cuts, which sound more convinving than the first half of the album.Sinclair's voice is definitely a reason for the nostalgic memories.

A mixture of Free Jazz and Progressive Rock with the result ending up to be somewhere in the middle.Love the energy of this trio and the pieces of the second half shine through. For fans of Jazz, the Canterbury scene and Prog Fusion.

4 stars This is the second album from the trio of Alex Maguire (keyboards), Michel Delville (guitar, Roland GR09, samples) and Tony Bianco (drums, sequencer) and was recorded live in the studio over two days (more than six months apart) in 2011. Although it is instrumental throughout, this is in fact a concept album deriving its inspiration as much from William Blake's visionary aesthetics (the title is taken from the poet's 'Songs of Innocence and Experience' ' and Blake is thanked in the credits along with Stravinsky and Sen. Bernie Saunders) as from a diversity of 20th-century musical icons. One of these icons is Hendrix, and I am sure that he would have enjoyed the raucous, loose yet tight interpretation of 'Purple Haze' that appears here; while instantly recognizable, it has been ripped to pieces and then reconstructed with loads of fuzzed guitar and a chaotic approach that is just wonderful.

But, they can go from one extreme to another so from a blasting rock out we can go to something quite gentle and reflective with Alex controlling the proceedings with some finesse and beautifully dated keyboard sounds. This is an album that is completely timeless as although it brings in influences from modern acts such as Tortoise it goes back to the invention of the Sixties and combines it with some over the top 70's histrionics. It is only the sound clarity that leads one to the conclusion that this is a work of today as opposed to something from 40 years ago. This does take some perseverance, just because the styles they are using are often very diverse but the listener is rewarded. Well worth investigation. www.moonjune.com

3 stars DouBt is a different kind of band, a kind of Jazz Rock Jam band, Avant, Experimental, everything together or something like that.

They don't have a bass player with exception of Richard Sinclair (Caravan) in a couple of tracks. The trio is compreseed of: Alex Maguire (keyboards), Tony Bianco (drums) e Michel Delville (guitars).

Being Experimental Jazz their 'essence' DouBt in Never Pet A Burning Dog (2010) is not really my cup of tea. They're free, no limits, almost Free Jazz. But I can say that the album is interesting.

'Laughter' , 'Passing Cloud' and 'Cosmic Surgery' (and its Gentle Giant ways) are the most interesting tracks on Never Pet A Burning Dog (2010), released by Moonjune Records.

The album was recorded in only 2 days in August 2009, which shows the intention of DouBt to have the most free sound possible. Lovers of Jazz would be in extase with Never Pet A Burning Dog (2010), but like I said, for me I prefer songs that were build and I also like vocals.

Interesting anyway!

3 stars Another good album from Michel Delville........... and a bit difficult to describe for me who has little experience with jazz/fusion. Other reviews has also been more thorough so I will therefore be brief.

This album is pretty attractive for a Soft Machine fan like myself. The same busy, frantic sound is being employed here. Just listen to the very intense third track Over Birkerot with it's guitars. An excellent track and the best on this album. Michel's guitars is being supported by some very busy and intense bass and drums by Alex Maguire and Tony Bianco. I would therefore put this album in the more intense end of the jazz scene............ in the Canterbury Scene in other words. There is something almost metallic over this album.

The quality is pretty great throughout. But after the great first five tracks, the quality drops a bit and fails to live up to the early promise. But this is still a very good album which deserve a large audience. I will also keep an eye on this band.

3 stars Existence of "The Wrong Object" known as Jazz Rock band in Belgium. "Brewed In Belgium" will have been preparations as the first Solo album of Alex Maguire that led this band and was produced because it developed exactly into this band. Because "Brewed In Belgium" had been live recorded, the recording of this band became the first studio album for Alex Maguire.

Keyboard player's Alex Maguire comes to be known as a member who supported Hatfield And The North since the time of 2005. However, the fact to which the impression of Hatfields is already established. Or, the listener had difficultly objectively caught his performance based on respect where the impression such as so it was possible to do in the performance not good had been given. It is said that the flow that consists as a base and directionality of the music character of Alex Maguire was in the music character that centers on the improvisation oppositely. The activity of him who was born in Britain in the field of Jazz that centers on the activity and the improvisation concerning music in various places might be large. Of course, there is an exchange in Canterbury with a great musician, too. Furthermore, it has the title of the therapist in the creation of the music for the theater and music.

It might be an important musician in the point that the existence of Michel Delville and Tony Bianco also constructs the music character of this band as a member who composes "The Doubt". Michel Delville is a guitar player from Belgium. It is said that he was related to the composition and the performance of the Alternative music from the 1980's. And, it has the exchange with the Jazz musician who acts as a member of above-mentioned The Wrong Object in an active situation around Britain.

Tony Bianco is a drum player from New York. It lives from 1992 to 1996 in Berlin and it is related to Free Jazz of various Europe.

If the construction of the purpose, directionality, and the music character is considered as a result, it is understood that the idea, following, and the base deeply put the root on this band. If the music character of this band is considered, it is a point that each member is well versed in the music for the improvisation. And, the point that was actually related to the music that derives in the Jazz musician and Canterbury and the performance and derived. Alex Maguire actually has the exchange with musicians such as Hatfield And The North and Elton Dean. If the flow also considers the music character of this band, it might be a part of the base. However, if the flavor of Canterbury that can be listened everywhere and the route of Jazz Rock think about the overall directionality of this band, the part of following and absorption might be strong. If the history of the activity of the music character of this band and the member is considered, construction of the music character that they should really do and an original part of the debut album of this The Doubt might be strong. A consistent it is done and part of the improvisation as ideas united as a collective impression and the music characters. Or, it is partial where the flavor of Canterbury is reminiscent as making the sound. It will be able to be said that it will succeed in the expression by indeed constructing all the music characters that they absorbed. Their organizations might be one points if it enumerates it as an item to feel those situations to be remarkable. The construction of music with the keyboard, the guitar, and the drum with irregular Trio might be a means to make the construction of the music character that they exactly do an embodiment. As for the organization to recollect Lifetime of Tony Williams, the possibility might been left as this kind of music character. And, the point to recollect the music of Canterbury that should be thought to be their bases as a point that should make a special mention. The existence of Richard Sinclair appointed when this album is recorded might actually shine greatly, too. It is also true to have given width to the entire music character of this album by the song and performing Richard Sinclair. This album might consist enough as a part of their greetings the Music character that they should exactly do.

A gentle scat of Richard Sinclair appears from the part of SE by the sound of the bell in "Corale Di San Luca". Atmosphere and the melody that Canterbury is good are exactly continued. The flow of Ride cymbals and the keyboard produces the tension and the anacatesthesia as a start of the album.

"Laughter" develops from the part of Coda of "Corale Di San Luca" and starts. The sound of the keyboard with the tension has been very distorted. It advances as the sound of the guitar that continues the flow indeed has the part of the improvisation. The band explodes while unifying the composition of the improvisation to the atmosphere of a few Canterbury in union. It might be perhaps one of the tunes that show the directionality of this band. The part of a complete improvisation has a good tension.

"Over Birkrot" is a tune collected to "Odyssey" that Terje Rypdal announced in 1975. It is the only cover tune for The Doubt. Part of obbligati of shining keyboard. Or, it is partial of Solo of the guitar that recollects the part of a few senses of relief, psychedelic, and Zappa. The performance of each member who intermittently twines round the part of the improvisation united overall gives good atmosphere.

"Sea" advances with the part of the overall improvisation. And, it is partial of a complete anacatesthesia with the guitar synthesizer. Or, it is partial of a geometrical sound of repeated Fender Rhodes. These flows are very impressive. The melody that gives a fantastic impression with the form of the improvisation might be very effective.

"Passing Cloud" is a fantastic tune that appoints a gentle song of Richard Sinclair. Atmosphere will be overall reminiscent of Hatfields. However, the usage of Mellotron has the part where the music character of Matching Mole is often recollected. The tension included in the flow that the fantasy and grace are produced as much as possible is impressive. The impression of the album extends further by this tune.

"Cosmic Surgery" rushes into the part of five rhythms from Intro of Riff of a heavy guitar and the repeated keyboard. A progressive element of this tune might be strong as the impression. And, it shifts to the progress of Chord with expression of feelings after continuing a heavy melody and twining of Mellotron. Solo of the keyboard that appears on the way is reminiscent of elements of a few Soft Machine.

As for "Aeon", the anacatesthesia of the rhythm and the guitar that puts fast and slow is impressive. The part of the overall improvisation might be a music character for them. The construction of the music character that flows in a complete tension and the space might be a field of good of them. It is a tune where flexibility exists together to the agility.

In "Beppe's Shelter", the sound of the guitar that is reminiscent of the element of a few psychedelic and Zappa is a feature. Part of twining of keyboard that expands width of tune. The element of Free Jazz of Europe might gone out strongly. And, the melody of the flute in close relation to the rhythm of a complete improvisation gives the listener a good tension. There might be an impression that beauty exists together to destruction. This tune can be caught as one of the directionality of them.

The music character that they were following as their debut albums is surely exactly made an embodiment. The music character of this band might hide potential further.

Doubt Jazz Rock/Fusion

3 stars Doubt is a real interesting band, basically a free jazz trio (keyboards, guitar, drums) that occaisonally likes to wander into progressive rock territory. The unlikely combination of those two styles makes for this unexpected yet successful CD. Free jazz can come across as an indulgent and boring 60s passe sort of thing, but Doubt modernizes things by playing light and tasteful sometimes, as opposed to constantly going full force as the 60s avant jazz bands would do. Canterbury/prog rock legend Richard Sinclair is also on hand for a couple cuts to help out with the 'proggier' moments.

Album opener Carole De San Luca features Sinclair's voice against a stately jazz/Gregorian chord progression backed by understated restless free drumming. From here the bands hit's a heavy dissonant King Crimson styled chord sequence that evolves into Doubt's trade mark free jazz improvisations. Keyboardist Alex Maguire's harsh playing recalls Chick Corea's distorted Fender Rhodes on Miles Live at the Fillmore. The free jazz will continue with the calmer track four, Sea, making a sharp difference with it's very quiet approach and guitarist Milchel Deville's ghostly ambient background accompaniment.

Track five, Passing Cloud, brings Sinclair on for more vocals. The combination of his soft Canterbury jazz vocals, Bianco's restless drums and Maguire's shifting Mellotron background could pass as an out-take from Crimson's jazzy Lizards album. Cosmic Surgery continues in the prog rock vein, heavy guitar riffs alternate with jazzy keyboard sequences and quiet classical/surf guitar melodies for a sound that is a cross between Focus, Sun City Girls and Quiet Sun. Eventually the free jazz takes over again which carries them up to album closer Beppe's Shelter. Beppe's is an odd one that opens with a furious guitar improv over a persistent rock beat followed by a jazzy space rock flight topped with a Mellotron flute solo, trippy.

Doubt is a great band, the musicians on here are all top notch. This is modern free jazz that breaks barriers and aspires to non-cliché progressive rock and beyond.

4 stars Filthy and rustic, but all so beautiful! DOUBT's debut is a nice mix between Hatfield and The North and The Keith Tippett Group(no unfriendly saxophones, though). The kind of mix you get from Matching Mole's "Little Red Record". Available on the daring MoonJune Records label. Other parts remind me of _Orange Skin Food_ from Soft Machine's Vol. II. The description on the MoonJune Records Label page describes it perfectly(better than I ever could): With moods and registers ranging from heavy-rock riffs to cosmic grooves and on to more lyrical and pastoral flavors, douBt's debut release, "Never Pet a Burning Dog", sound like nothing less than the missing link between Sun Ra, John Zorn's Masada, vintage Terje Rypdal, Sonic Youth and Ennio Morricone. The record also features guest contributions from Canterbury legend Richard Sinclair on vocals and bass.

There are a few contemplative moments such as _Passing Cloud_ which very well may be the _Sea Song_ of the album(re: Robert Wyatt's Rock Bottom). There's some heavenly mellotron, fender rhodes piano, and jazzy brush strokes backing up Richard Sinclair's voice(which sounds very much like Robert Wyatt). _Cosmic Surgery_ has a keyboard intro not unlike Gentle Giant's _Free Hand_, but higher up in the mix and more aggressive. Mellotron is present once again. Reminds me of the current trio version of Van Der Graaf Generator meets Tom Verlaine's guitar(re: Television). A rustic sounding track a la Quiet Sun and a real barnburner.

The very last track _Beppe's Shelter_ is very heavy(most likely a homage to Arti E Mestieri's keyboardist - Beppe Crovella who has a great tribute album to Soft Machine's Mike Ratledge _What's Rattlin' On The Moon). This track is like a cross between Soft Machine 5 and Toni Iommi's riffing on Black Sabbath's Master Of Reality(or for a modern reference; The Melvins). What makes this very unique is the flute-like synth by Alex MaGuire which is played over top of the mayhem. Phenominal.

This is one of the best debut's I've heard in quite some time and one the better Canterbury outings in a decade. An underrated gem on par with Pip Pyle's Seven Year Itch. May also appeal to fans of Wayne Horvitz PIGPEN(especially the great _V As In Victim_ from 1994) and Joachim Kuhn's LET'S BE GENEROUS project. Rating: solid 4 stars.

Thanks to easy money for the artist addition.
